- Don't panic, Darrell...I seriously doubt that the FCC will allow
- anything outside of the current formats (1x2, 1x3, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3).
- I am confident that all such calls must begin with a K, W, N or
- AA-AL, since those prefixes are allocated to the U.S. It would be
- interesting to see the text of the proposal to see if there are
- any details about this. Obviously, IH8DX would have to be an
- Italian station, since they have been assigned the I block of
- prefixes. Of course, if you are from Georgia, and live in American
- Samoa, you could have AH8DX for a callsign, but then you would be
- DX. .... ..
-
-
- Let me guess ... you won't be able to get a 1x2 callsign (or an
- A-prefixed 2x2) if you're not an Extra, and so on , either ...

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
-
- The ARRL is sponsoring a National Examination Day for Amateur Radio
- License testing. That day is this Saturday, October 30, 1993.
-
- The following is a listing of nearly 80 examination teams who will be
- participating in this activity.
-
- We wish all examinees the best of luck. We especially offer our thanks
- and appreciation to all VE Teams who are participating both in this day--
- and the remaining 364 days of each year. Know that your efforts
- are appreciated!
-
-
- AMATEUR RADIO EXAMINATION OPPORTUNITIES
-
-
-
- *****************************************************************
-
- Special Note: Amateur Radio licenses usually arrive between 8 and
- 10 weeks after the test session. The FCC considers their
- processing time to be 90 days--from the date they receive the
- application. The FCC usually receives the application one
- to two weeks after the test session (once the VE Team and the
- coordinating VEC have completed their processing).
-
-
- Note: Codeless Technician to Technician w/HF upgraders (who pass a
- Morse code test) will not receive a new license from the FCC.
- The existing Technician license plus the CSCE conveying the Morse
- code test credit is the only documentation issued for use of
- the additional HF privileges.
-
- *****************************************************************
-
- The following test session information is provided by the
- ARRL/VEC for the upcoming six to eight week period. For
- further information, please contact the test session CONTACT
- PERSON at the telephone number provided. If necessary, you
- may contact the ARRL/VEC at 203-666-1541 x282 for additional
- information. Electronic mail may be forwarded to the ARRL/VEC
- via USENET at "bjahnke@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
- MCI ID: 215-5052.
-
- Although the test session information presented here does
- not indicate whether walk-ins are accepted or not, most test
- sessions do allow walk-ins. We encourage you, however, to
- always contact the CONTACT PERSON at the telephone number
- provided so that the VE Team is aware that you be attending
- the test session.
-
-
-
- STILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR YOUR EXAM?
-
- If you would like information on how to become licensed; or
- how to locate Amateur Radio clubs, instructors, licensing
- classes and/or Novice examiners in your area; please contact
- the ARRL Educational Activities Department (EAD) at 203-666-
- 1541 x219. The EAD can also provide information on
- recommended study materials. Electronic mail may be forwarded
- to the ARRL EAD via USENET at "rwhite@arrl.org" or via MCI Mail to
- MCI ID: 215-5052.

- Hi,
- Baud is a rate, like Hertz, whether is bits per second or symbols. Did you

- Good observation - 10 meters has been quiet for the past couple of
- months, but if you hang around enough, you can catch an opening now
- and then. It's not dead yet, and even at the very bottom of the
- sunspot cycle we will have sporadic E propagation, mostly in the
- summer, and transequatorial propagation as well.

- Generally, the higher you go in frequency, the more "spotty" the
- propagation can be. Particularly on 10 meters, but sometimes on the
- other bands too. I have heard stations accross town working stations
- that are virtually unreadable for me. Keep in mind too, that in some
- areas there are just not very many active stations. Brazil is one of
- those countries where there is not a great deal of activity - there
- seems to be more activity in Argentina, but even then, South America
- is not a hotbed of HF activity compared to Europe and North America.
- Sometimes the one station that you hear will have an exceptionally
- good transmitting system (KW, beam high in the air) - and the other
- stations running low power and a dipole are just not as visible.

- If this was a normal weekday, most of the JAs had already gone to work.
- If it is evening here, it is morning there. Also, most JAs do not have
- large antenna systems. The few that do are the ones that you will tend
- to hear the best. If conditions are very good, you will hear the 100
- watt/dipole guys and you will hear more stations in that case.

-
- As we get into the depths of the sunspot minimum, the stations that
- have the large antenna systems will stand out more and more. When
- propagation is marginal, 100 watts and a vertical will simply not be
- as visible as a KW and a high antenna. Us little guys are going to
- get buried in the noise and QRM, and will likely go find something
- more fun to do. Stay tuned for the next sunspot peak around the turn
- of the century - about 6 years away. Good luck.

- Yup, the bands are dead. Have you noticed how many low band rigs are

- They have a zillion hams in Japan, but they're all on V/UHF!

- My son is looking to get started in radio and would like to create a

- Appreciate any help anyone can give me.

- Subject: TRS Model 100 for RTTY/CW/Packet
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Has anyone used a TRS Model 100 to interpret radio signals like
- RTTY, CW or Packet?
-
- Specifically, it occured to us that the Cassette port could decode
- and encode digitial signals at the low baud rates typical of RTTY
- or packet that we could plug the rig directly in withOUT a TNC.
-
- Love to hear any suggestions or success stories.

- Who's "THEY?" Unless the FCC has gotten some new teeth, they won't do it
- alone. My impression is still that there must be a fair amount of help
- from the affected amateurs, or a least a LOT of prodding, in order to get
- the FCC involved. Of course, false SOS calls, or intentionally jamming
- air-traffic radio would get an immediate response. But with the ham
- bands, as we all know, it's a self-policing policy for the most part,
- or at least until enough of a stink has been raised to get the FCC's
- monitors on the scene.
-
- I still see a LARGE amount of room for abuse of the airwaves. The fines
- will help, but the ham bands, historically, have ranked fairly low on
- the FCC's priority list. Maybe this will change somewhat? Or already has?
